Today’s Image ~ Taos Door & Adobe Wall

Taos Door & Adobe Wall

Canon Powershot G9, 120mm equivalent, hand-held

I walked around the streets of Taos today playing with my Canon G9 looking for ’southwest lifestyle’ scenes. I discovered many great subjects but this door and and wall caught my eye. I love adobe for its warmth and texture, but most of all for its character.

This image was captured as a raw image exposing to the right, and developed using Photoshop CS3 and Tony Kuyper’s Luminosity Masks. I selected a little bit warmer white balance than what the camera determined was correct and I used Tony’s Expanded Mid-tones mask with a curves adjustment layer.

A note about the G9: although I went out to ‘play’ with it I have discovered that it’s a very capable camera that when used properly can deliver excellent images. I find that it’s important to shoot at the lowest ISO possible and make sure your exposure is dead-on using the expose-to-the-right (ETR) method.

I really like this image. Your eye starts to follow the steps from the top right side of the photograph. Then, the reflected light visible over the door just brings your eye right through the photograph. Very well composed and pleasing to the eye.
