The summer “monsoon” took a bit of a break this month but was in full-force again this past weekend. I always seem to miss good, dynamic weather when attempting to photograph Shiprock Peak in northwestern New Mexico. But this past Monday on the drive home from the Grand Canyon the sky was full of great clouds.
This image of a thunderstorm over Shiprock Peak and another like it but in color, are available for purchase at my website AdamSchallau.com.

This is great, and thanks for answering my request! I really like the monotone on this photo. I have always wanted to take photos up there, but every time I am in the area I find myself busy, Normally I am up there for ministry, so there isn’t much time. Oh well….Great SHOT!
love the monsoon darkness… wish we had the monsoon here… day 57 of over 100 ( sigh )
Hi Estevan,
When you figure that it’s an out-of-the-way location with no place to camp (legally) and the nearest motel is at least an hour drive away, it’s tough to get a nice shot.
Hi Mom,
Typical Texas weather, huh? It’s either feast or famine. I predict torrential downpours and flash flooding in 3, 2, 1…
WOW!! Adam this is fantastic…..love that dynamic sky!!
Hi Sarah,
Thank you! I happen to think that New Mexico has some of the most interesting skies in all of the Southwest.
Great work! It’s so hard to get a storm over Shiprock. Nice capture, especially with the road leading you in with a nice bright tone. I might do just a tad more burn/dodge around shiprock to separate it some from the background cloud.
Love the feel that sepia gives the already gorgeous composition.
