Posted by Adam Schallau on Aug 17 2008 | Shameless Self Promotion, Lifestyle, Travel, New Mexico, News

I had another opportunity to contribute to the September 2008 issue of New Mexico Magazine. This time it’s for the article titled Enchanting Decanting about New Mexico wineries.

I have several photographs accompanying the article. I’d like to thank Chris, Jesse, Michele and Liliana at Vivác Winery in Dixon, New Mexico, for their time and hospitality. Here are the pictures that accompany the article.

New Mexico Magazine ~ June 2008

Posted by Adam Schallau on May 15 2008 | Shameless Self Promotion, New Mexico, News

Cat tails and red willow. Orilla Verde Recreation Area near Taos, New Mexico. Copyright Adam Schallau. If you happen to pickup a copy of the June 2008 issue of New Mexico Magazine you will discover a few of my images in the articles “Taking the High Road” by Katie Arnold, and “Keeping Current” by Steve Shoup. I’d also like to mention that I was impressed with the magazine’s art team and their ability to faithfully reproduce the colors in my images.

Chile ristras hung to dry in the village of Chimayo, New Mexico. The photo of chile ristras hanging from a turquoise beam was shot last summer in Chimayo near the santuario. The other photo of cat tails and red willow was shot this past March along the banks of the Rio Grande River in the Orilla Verde Recreation Area near the village of Pilar, New Mexico. There is a third photo in the magazine shot this past July from the rim of the Rio Grande River Gorge west of Taos.

It’s in the bag. How to protect your gear on a river trip.

Posted by Adam Schallau on Apr 18 2008 | Texas, Tips & Tricks, Equipment, Rio Grande River, Travel, News

On my recent river trip down the Rio Grande River through Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park I carried with me my Canon 5D along with 4 lenses, the 17-40mm f/4L, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/4L IS, and the 300mm f/4L IS. In addition I had numerous filters, extra batteries, and of course memory cards. My biggest concern on the trip was water. I was going to be surrounded by it for three days navigating through rapids and hopefully I wouldn’t capsize the canoe.

Lowepro DryZone 200 AW waterproof camera bag.The guide service that I hired would be providing dry bags for my clothing, tent, and sleeping bag, but I needed something more to protect my camera gear. I contacted Lowepro and told them what I was going to be doing and they graciously provided my with a DryZone 200 AW camera bag.

If you’re not familiar with the DryZone series of bags let me give you a quick run-down. The DryZone bags are soft sided camera backpacks that feature a waterproof inner compartment known as a drypod that is sealed with a TIZIP™ zipper. This bag will float even when fully loaded! Today’s Image ~ On the road again…

Posted by Adam Schallau on Mar 27 2008 | Texas, National Park, Travel, Today's Image, News

…actually we’re back home again after our second trip to Texas in two weeks. This time we made a trip down to Big Bend National Park to start my project on Santa Elena Canyon that is funded through the Luminous Landscape Endowment.

Rainbow in west Texas over my truckThe weather was excellent with highs in the low 80s, the wind was calm, and mother nature provided some nice clouds. On the morning we left Terlingua for the return trip to New Mexico we ran into storms with high-winds and very threatening skies, but as we approached the town of Alpine, Texas the storms began to clear and we were treated to this beautiful rainbow.

The Luminous Landscape Endowment Fund

Posted by Adam Schallau on Mar 11 2008 | Shameless Self Promotion, Texas, National Park, Rio Grande River, News

I’m excited to announce that I’m one of eight recipients of the 2007/2008 Luminous Landscape Endowment Fund!

About the endowment with text from LuminousLandscape.com:

In August 2007 The Luminous Landscape Inc., created a fund designed to provide financial assistance to photographers to help finance worthwhile photographic projects. A call for submissions was made, with a deadline of Feb 11, 2008.

This fund was financed by readers like you through purchases of our download video tutorials, and also by individual donors and corporate sponsors. In all $20,000 was raised during our initial funding period. (You can read about the program and application process here.)

More than 200 applications were received, and our panel of judges found selecting just a handful of photographers and their projects a most difficult task. The applications selected were, in each case, put forward by at least two of the judges. Continue Reading »

Vandalism at Fire Roof Ruin

Posted by Adam Schallau on Oct 29 2007 | Utah, Anasazi, News

Fire Roof Ruin, Mule Canyon, Cedar Mesa, UtahUnfortunately someone has found it necessary to leave their mark on the sandstone bench immediately in-front of Fire Roof Ruin. This ruin is an Ancient Puebloan (Anasazi) granary that is located in southern Utah’s Cedar Mesa region. Cedar Mesa is an area rich in cultural sites, most of which require hiking or backpacking to reach.

Thank you to Mark Hudon for bringing this to the publics attention. >>>Click here for details<<<

UPDATE 10.30.2007
The people that are responsible for the graffiti at Fire Roof ruin drove back over 1,000 miles (all night non-stop) to cleanup the graffiti! I feel that they have done the right thing and have shown remorse for their actions. I have written thanking them for correcting their mistake.

Bravo to the members and participants over at NaturePhotographers.net for their part in reaching a positive outcome.

Taos Mountain Balloon Rally 2007

Posted by Adam Schallau on Oct 18 2007 | Travel, New Mexico, News

Taos Mountain Balloon RallyIt’s that time of year again, time for the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally. Even if you think balloons aren’t your cup of tea I suggest getting out to enjoy the sights. I skipped my first two seasons in Taos and I’m sorry I did. It’s an amazing site to see so many balloons over the town with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a backdrop.

The rally is scheduled for October 25-28 with flights starting at dawn on Friday the 26th. Don’t forget the “Balloomenshine” (aka Balloon Glow) at dusk on Saturday the 27th.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that the wind will be light and that there will be snow on the mountains.

Please click here if you’d like to see more photos of the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally.
