Picking grapes at Vivac Winery

Posted by Adam Schallau on Sep 26 2008 | Lifestyle, New Mexico

I’ve finished editing and processing a majority of my photos from last weekends grape picking event at Vivac Winery in Dixon, New Mexico. Here are the images from the day.

The technique used creates a scene that gives the impression of being a miniature, or a model, because of the lack of depth-of-field.

Classic Southwest ~ ‘56 Chevy and Saint Francis de Asis Church

A ‘56 Chevy parked behind Saint Francis de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Copyright Adam Schallau.Every now and then, you get lucky. I was eating dinner this evening at the Ranchos Grille, on the patio, when this beautiful red and white ‘56 Chevy pulled into the parking lot.

The driver parked among all the other cars, and my first thought was “cool, I’ll get some shots when I’m done eating”. I went about eating my dinner of chicken enchiladas smothered in green chile (yum!) Continue Reading »

New Mexico Magazine, Enchanting Decanting article

Posted by Adam Schallau on Aug 17 2008 | Shameless Self Promotion, Lifestyle, Travel, New Mexico, News

I had another opportunity to contribute to the September 2008 issue of New Mexico Magazine. This time it’s for the article titled Enchanting Decanting about New Mexico wineries.

I have several photographs accompanying the article. I’d like to thank Chris, Jesse, Michele and Liliana at Vivác Winery in Dixon, New Mexico, for their time and hospitality. Here are the pictures that accompany the article.

Today’s Image ~ Patience of a Saint

Taos Dog. St. Francis de Asis church in Ranchos de Taos. Copyright Adam Schallau / RecapturePhoto.comI had to dig into my archives for this one, all the way back to my days of shooting Fuji Velvia slide film. I’ve shot countless photos in the Taos area over the years, but this is still one of my favorites.

For my first two years living hear I rented a small place in Ranchos de Taos, one block from the historic Saint Francis de Asis church which is easily one of the most photographed buildings in North America. When the light was good I’d make my way to the church with camera in hand. On this particular evening I was being shadowed by a dog (probably looking for a handout) as I explored the light on the church. I kept tripping over him as I’d back up to reposition my tripod, or he would wonder into the shot often getting right in front of the camera. The dog was frustrating the heck out of me.

Then it came to me. I’ve got plenty of photos of the church, why couldn’t the dog be the subject? I couldn’t believe it when I patted the top of the adobe wall that surrounds the church’s plaza and the dog obediently jumped up onto it. He sat there very patiently as I took several photos of him basked in the late afternoon light with the church in the background. What a great dog and another great moment in Taos.

Taos Door & Adobe Wall

Canon Powershot G9, 120mm equivalent, hand-held

I walked around the streets of Taos today playing with my Canon G9 looking for ’southwest lifestyle’ scenes. I discovered many great subjects but this door and and wall caught my eye. I love adobe for its warmth and texture, but most of all for its character. Continue Reading »

Chili Peppers

Chile Peppers! ~ A New Mexico tradition

Canon 5D, 24-70mm f/2.8L

It’s chile pepper drying time in New Mexico! In late summer and early fall the chilies are harvested and hung to dry so we can have chile year round. What does this have to do with photography? It means we have a very unique type of fall color to shoot in New Mexico. Fresh chile ristras are hanging everywhere along with buckets of chilies waiting to be strung up. I’m quickly filling up my hard-drive shooting New Mexico’s ‘fall color’.
