I am pleased to announce that I have been accepted as a member in Greener Photography (www.GreenerPhotography.org). Greener Photography is place for the photographic imaging community to share ideas about ways we can reduce our waste, preserve local resources and live and work with environmentally friendly practices.

Here are Greener Photography’s four core values:
Preservation – Preservation conserves all of the resources that go into creating photographic images. It is the single best thing we can do to reduce the impact of our photographs.

Reduction – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. While we are trying to produce the most archival products in our industry, we will do so while using the least energy-intensive products available.

Local Production – Shipping and transport are some of the biggest sources of pollution. Anything that can be produced, manufactured and assembled locally will have a significantly lower environmental impact than components manufactured overseas.

Cruelty-Free – Animals and people are as much part of the eco-system as water, air, and trees. We do not see a difference between environmentally harmful products and those produced in harmful working conditions.

Greener Photography Pledge – I believe that we have a responsibility to protect the environment. As a member of Greener Photography, I am committed to environmentally-friendly practices and to encouraging change within our industry. Within my own businesses and in doing business with others, I am committed to these objectives:

>to comply with all applicable environmental regulations and to strive to exceed compliance.

>to conserve energy, water, and other natural resources.

>to develop and implement practices that prevent pollution and waste to offer products to our clients that are environmentally-friendly, conservation quality, locally-made and/or cruelty-free.

>to be a source for change within our industry by encouraging other photographic businesses to be environmentally responsible.

What we are doing – My wife and I have taken several steps to reduce our impact, and to conserve energy and natural resources both at home and in the business including:

>using double-sided  photographic papers allowing printing on both sides of the sheet. This is helpful in the development process of new images when I am printing proofs.

>re-using packaging and shipping materials whenever possible. This includes cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and packaging peanuts.

>buying used camera equipment whenever possible.

>maintaining our vehicle and keeping it in tip-top shape. Our truck is a 2001 model with over 125,000 miles and we still get 24mpg on the highway even though it’s only  rated for 17mpg.
