Artist-in-Residence ~ Grand Canyon
In March 2009 I had honor of spending three weeks living on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park as Artist-in-Residence. The Artist-in-Residence program allowed me to immerse myself in my photography.
A valuable component of the Artist-in-Residence program is to share your inspiration with others. I presented three programs during my residency including a mini-workshop for youth from the local school. My goal was to introduce them to the art of landscape photography, to inspire them to explore their surroundings through the lens of a camera, and to share their work with others. My other programs, which I presented to the park visitors, touched on several subjects including what drives my photography, the equipment I use, my passion for the American Southwest, and the influence of photography on awareness of environmental issues and preservation.
In addition to the three public programs , the park also asks that I donate a photograph that is created during my residency that embodies the values of the Grand Canyon’s interpretive themes. I will be donating a piece later this year or sometime in early 2010.
This has been an exciting year. First winning New Mexico Magazine’s photography contest, then receiving The Luminous Landscape Endowment, and now to be selected as Artist-in-Residence at the Grand Canyon. I am truly humbled to have my work recognized and to have been selected for this opportunity.
