A Leaf Trapped in the Ice

Posted by Adam Schallau on Nov 23 2008 | Winter, Weather, Autumn

A leaf trapped in the ice. Copyright Adam Schallau. The rush to photograph autumn color is over and now I’m impatiently waiting for winter.  If it’s going to be cold and windy, well then, I want it to snow.  Truth be told, the weather has been incredibly beautiful lately, with clear blue skies and pleasant  daytime temperatures, but I still can’t wait for snow (and ice).

Sunset on Shiprock, New Mexico

Posted by Adam Schallau on Nov 11 2008 | New Mexico

Sunset on Shiprock. Copyright Adam Schallau.Located in northwestern new Mexico near the Four Corners, Shiprock is a volcanic neck that rises nearly 1,800 feet above the desert floor of the Navajo Nation. Named by Anglos for its resemblance to a 19th century clipper ship, the Diné (Navajo people) call the peak Tsé Bit’a'í  or “rock with wings” in reference to the legend of the great bird that brought them from the north to their present lands.

Procession Panel Petroglyphs

Posted by Adam Schallau on Nov 10 2008 | Ancestral Puebloan, Rock Art, Utah, Anasazi

Procession Panel under the mid-day sun. Comb Ridge near Bluff, Utah. Copyright Adam Schallau. This past Saturday I hiked up one of the many canyons that cut into Comb Ridge near Bluff, Utah to visit Procession Panel, a huge rock art panel with 179 figures. Comb Ridge is an amazing place that is full of cultural treasures and quite canyons to explore, appreciate and enjoy. I’ll share a few more images of Procession Panel over the next few days, including a large panoramic showcasing the entire panel.

Please remember that it is a privilege to visit Ancestral Puebloan cultural sites, whether in a National Park or public lands such as Comb Ridge. When visiting a cultural site,  please do so with respect for their past inhabitants and future visitors alike.
